Farmhand #2, Image Comics

With a wonderfully bizarre sense of humor, Farmhand #2 (Image Comics) continues to overflow with wild and weird ideas that readers will definitely enjoy! In its second installment, Farmhand pushes the narrative forward as a gripping family drama that balances the horror and comedy aspects.

Ezekiel Jenkins just wants to forget his past. Unfortunately, now that he’s returned to his family’s farm, that’s going to be damn near impossible. And if dealing with his own demons isn’t enough, today he’ll be dealing with a few of his father’s as well.

5) What Happened Before…

In the first installment, Jed’s son, Ezekiel, has been living under his father’s shadow. Ezekiel wants to be his own man, but the family business keeps calling him back. But deep in the soil of the Jenkins Family Farm, something dark has taken root, and it’s beginning to blossom!

4) The Writing!

Writer/artist Rob Guillory beautifully captures the life of Ezekiel in a single page. In a short story, told in 15 panels, we see how Ezekiel has grieved since his mother’s death and how his estrangement with his father began. Kody Chamberlain’s lettering emphasizes certain words in bold to highlight the emotions.

3) The Artwork!

Pulling off the double duty, Guillory also illustrates how the plants in the Jenkins Family Farm have been helping others. Ezekiel’s father has been using his weird plants to replace missing body parts. Readers will see how a lilac is used to fill in for a patient’s missing noise.

2) The Colors!

Colorist Taylor Wells focuses on the green and yellow tones throughout the narrative. Notice how the kids in the schoolyard stand out because of their red and yellow uniform.

1) A Wild Read!

Showing off its zany brand of horror and comedy, Farmhand #2 is a highly imaginative display of artwork and storytelling. I look forward to what happens next in the third issue.
