An action-packed installment, Buffy The Vampire Slayer #3 (BOOM! Studios) perfectly combines witty comedy and teen drama into a terrifying vampire thriller. Based on Joss Whedon’s groundbreaking series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, the pop culture phenomenon returns in this brilliantly charming and stylish reboot.
Buffy and the Scooby Gang (the name was Xander’s idea, he’s workshopping it, it probably won’t stick) delve deeper into the heart of Sunnydale’s underbelly-and make a shocking discovery about the true nature of the Hellmouth. Meanwhile, Drusilla-AKA THE MISTRESS-sets her sights on Cordelia, as Cordy and Spike find accidental common ground.
Here are 5 reasons why we love Buffy The Vampire Slayer #3:
5) What Happened Before!
Woking at a fast food joint, Buffy is even more tired as she’s trying to get good grades at school and stick to her nightly patrol. After making new friends, Willow and Xander, Buffy’s vampire slaying keeps getting in the way. Drusilla and Spike have something new, protecting them from her wooden stakes.
4) The Writing!
Writer Jordie Bellaire steers the father/daughter relationship between Giles and Buffy in the right directed. I also noticed another significant change in dynamics, as Spike acts more like Drusilla’s servant than her longtime lover. Letterer Ed Dukeshire emphasizes the power play in the new relationship, establishing how Drusilla has more control over Spike.
3) The Art!
I really loved the action-packed pages from artist Dan Mora. The illustrations capture Buffy fighting a giant bat in the city. Notice the graffiti-painted wall that Buffy walks next to. In giant letters, someone spray-painted the word, “Slayer,” on the wall. It feels like a fun homage to the movie logo, a neat little tribute to the late Luke Perry.
2) The Colors!
Raul Angulo fills the pages with red tones as the giant bat strikes out and spreads its wings. The color red also stands out because of Buffy’s matching jeans. I really like the look of Cordelia Chase’s highlights, which blends brown and blonde strands.
1) A Great Read!
After establishing the characters and their relationships, the horror action is what really drives Buffy The Vampire Slayer #3! I can’t wait to read what happens next!
