As part of the comiXology Originals line, Josie and the Pussycats in Space #1 has tremendous fun pitting the Archie Comics rock stars against intergalactic terrors. They may be the hottest band around but are they strong enough together as a group to withstand alien horrors?
Josie and the Pussycats are the hottest band in outer space! But with fame and fortune comes turmoil as internal conflicts are threatening to tear the group apart. But that’s nothing compared to the alien horrors they’re about to encounter as they find themselves adrift in the vastness of space! Even if the Pussycats manage to stick together as a band, will they be able to survive the horrors that await them in the final frontier?
Here are 5 reasons why you should get Josie and the Pussycats in Space #1:
5) The Pussycats!
If you are a fan of Riverdale, I dare you to not imitate Ashleigh Murray’s voice while reading Josie’s lines. You realize how in tune the character and her live-action counterpart are to each other. The iconic cat ears and costumes get a cheeky nod too in the opening pages.
4) The Writing!
Writer Alex de Campi does a great job establishing the sisterly camaraderie between Josie, Valerie, and Melody. In the narrative, space is the worst place to work in because the faulty tech constantly crashes. The lettering by Jack Morelli highlights the witty banter from the spaceship crew as they work against the clock to leave on time.
3) The Artwork!
Artist Devaki Neogi does a great job crafting the inspired sci-fi fashion. Notice how the Pussycats have shoulder pads on their outfits. The spaceship itself serves as a metaphor for the tour buses that rock stars usually travel in. The alien creature in the narrative looks like it is always screaming in Neogi’s illustrations.
2) The Colors!
I really want to talk about the alien creature and how the coloring works. You can see how the tones by colorist Lee Loughridge shape the face into a skull. Notice how vibrant the colors are the Pussycats are in the rock star lifestyle before turning to whites and grays inside the spaceship.
1) Fun Horror!
Full of witty humor, Josie and the Pussycats in Space #1 is a tremendously fun read! Looking forward to the next issue!
