With shocking body horror imagery, Unearth #2 (Image Comics) continues the surreal nightmarish mystery at a gripping pace. As an effective ensemble drama, the Unearth series develops the characters while cranking up the gross-out factor.
Escorted by military hard cases, a group of scientists descend into a strange cave system in hopes of unlocking the secrets of a flesh-warping infection. But the cave system is crawling with hideous creatures that not only twist flesh, but minds as well! Is it possible this disease is working with a ghastly purpose?
Here are 5 reasons why you should read Unearth #2:
5) What Happened Before!

With the small team, Dr. Reyes is joined by Lt. Morris and. Dr. McCommick into the cave expedition. The mysterious caves reveal something ancient and monstrous lurking in the shadows. While the team investigates the caves, the virus continues to spread.
4) The Writing!
Writers Cullen Bunn and Kyle Stahm do a great job capturing the tension by switching between subplots. We see what’s happening outside in the outside world as the virus spreads and what the cave explorers discover internally. The letters by Crank! bolds certain words that heighten the supernatural mystery of The Beastmother.
3) The Artwork!
Artist Baldemar Rivas builds the suspense though extreme closeups with the jaw-dropping opening kill. Notice how we don’t see the entire design of the cave monster. We just see extended tentacles and odd shapes moving in the darkness.
2) The Colors!
From green to purple, different parts of the cave have their own colors. The light from the helmet is brightly lit and white; as if replicating a lens flare. Notice how the quarantine camps are painted in red.
1) A Claustrophobic Thriller!
Unearth #2 delivers an extra strong dose of body horror. I can’t wait to get my hands of the second issue!
Unearth #2 arrives in stores on August 14th, 2019.
