The penultimate installment before the finale, NBC continues the action and drama of Blindspot Season 3 with Episode 21: Defection, starring Jaimie Alexander and Sullivan Stapleton. Jane Doe (Alexander) and Kurt Weller (Stapleton) are back together solving the cases behind the mystery tattoos.
In the flashback, Shepard (Michelle Hurd) is training a young Roman how to outsmart a young Remi. When Shepard leaves, Remi says the test is really about working together to be better. In the present, Rich Dotcom (Ennis Esmer) joins the team on their new tattoo case but everyone seems to be worried and exhausted.
Elsewhere, Blake (Tori Anderson) notices something is odd with Roman (Luke Mitchell). Reade (Rob Brown) talks to Tasha (Audrey Esparza) about his breakup with Megan (Reshma Shetty). With a new lead, Jane remembers a plan that Shepard and Roman were working.
Kurt finds himself interrogating Shepard, who is handcuffed. Shepard notices the ring on Kurt’s finger and plays around with him, requesting Jane. Though she agrees, Keaton (Chad Donella) warns Jane that her mother will manipulate her.
After listening to Shepard crying and planning, Jane wonders if she purposely let Roman escape. As Black continues her tour, Patterson (Ashley Johnson) discovers Roman’s next target is the United Nations. After suffering a migraine, Roman takes his leave.
As tje FBI secures the United Nations, Rich and Patterson think they have a suspect. Tasha and Reade discover the bomb in the basement, inside a copy machine. Although Tasha and Reade disarm the bomb, Patterson quickly realizes this wasn’t Roman’s true plan.
Patterson interrogates Avery’s godmother (Jennifer Esposito), who gives up the pipeline locations. She figures out it’s not a terrorist attack, it’s an assassination. As Jane and Kurt protect the diplomats, they start talking about Crawford’s land deal.
While Roman gathers his assassin team, Jane and Kurt escape with the diplomats. After Roman orders his team to shoot to kill, Patterson and rich guide them to a safety zone. Kurt manages to take down a bunch of hitmen before Roman starts shooting.
With one of the diplomats wounded, Jane holds the rest off. As Tasha and Reade arrive to the rescue, Jane and Kurt make the jump. As Patterson reviews the footage, she discovers Tasha involved in the stealing of the diplomat’s phone.
With no one giving up the phone, Crawford sells out Tasha to the FBI team. After getting fired from the CIA, Tasha ends up in bed with Reade. After failing his mission, Roman tells he loves Blake before disappearing.
As a new tattoo pops up, Roman reveals in a video message that he wants to play one last game, winner takes all.
