A spell-binding mix of horror, satire, and police procedural, a new version of Death Note makes its way to audiences from Netflix with an official trailer. The international acclaimed series exploits its themes in this latest live-action remake.
Based on the Japanese manga series written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata, Death Note follows Light Turner (Nat Wolff), a young man living in the crime-ridden streets of Seattle. Light has in his hands a supernatural notebook known as The Death Note. In his possession, the Death Note grants him the power to kill any person simply by writing down their name on the pages. While Light uses the notebook to kill criminals, an enigmatic detective known as L (Keith Stanfield) attempts to track him down and end his reign of terror.
Check out our 5 thoughts on the Death Note official trailer:
5. Best Casting Ever!
Known for his popular roles in Spider-Man and The Last Temptation of Christ, William Dafoe plays the voice of the god of death, the shinigami known as Ryuk. Amusing himself, Ryuk gives Light the Death Note and tempts him to act out his darkest fantasies. After setting up the rules, Ryuk has fun watching Light become a criminal mastermind and outwit the police.
4. Atlanta!
Keith Stanfield is playing the Sherlock Holmes-inspired detective known as L. Stanfield is at his quirkiest in the comedy/drama Atlanta and at his scariest in Get Out. A genius in his own way, L is the only person who can actually make Light sweat. If you love the movies as much as I do, I really hope we get to see Light and L have their own standoff as they play a game of chess.
3. A Different Adaptation
It’s hard to take the fanboy outrage seriously when Death Note has already been adapted into two live-action Japanese movies by Shūsuke Kaneko. The Death Note franchise is now being re-told under a new vision and setting.
2. The Leftovers!
Margaret Qualley has been nothing but amazing in the phenomenal HBO series, The Leftovers. I’m very interested in seeing what her take is in the role of the pop singer/supermodel Misa Amane.
1. The Director
Director Adam Wingard has scared audiences with You’re Next and Blair Witch. He turned romantic lead Dan Stevens (Beauty and the Beast) into an unstoppable killing machine in The Guest. Once you take away the fake nerd rage, you’ll realize the Death Note series is in capable hands.
Death Note will premiere on Netflix August 25, 2017.
