Halfway through its extended 10-part arc, Fox continues The X-Files: Season 11 as the series dips back into its expansive mythology in Episode 5: Ghouli. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson return as the iconic FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.
At an abandoned ship, two teenage girls stumble upon each other in the darkness. Both holding knives, the teens suddenly seeing monsters standing right in front of them. Thinking the other is the monster, the girls start stabbing each other, bleeding almost to death.
Scully walks a fine line between reality and dreamscape, finding herself in an unknown house. She picks up a snow globe with a tiny ship named Chimera inside. Everything about her strange dream has been clues leading to an open case in The X-Files.
At the hospital, Mulder and Scully interrogate the teen girls and get a name, Jackson Van De Kamp ( Miles Robbins). The case appears to to be a homing beacon to two shadowy government agents as well. Mulder and Scully end up at the same house that was in her vision and hear gunshots.
After finding the parents and Jackson dead, Scully starts pick up clues that he possesses special powers. Everything starts hitting Scully in a personal way, especially when she meets Jackson’s therapist. Jackson had a vision about an alien apocalypse that revolved around him.
Knowing Jackson is really William, Scully discovers what happened to her baby she gave up for adoption. A heartbroken Scully begs forgiveness from William as she prays next to his dead son. Jackson unzips himself from his body bag after Scully sadly reveals she was trying to protect him.
Mulder has a private conversation with Skinner (Mitch Pileggi), who reveals about the secret Project Crossroads. Realizing Cigarette-Smoking Man is behind this, Mulder uncovers more history about the defunded super-soldier program. Scully has another vision after discovering Jackson’s body is missing from the morgue.
Because Jackson can psychically manipulate what people see, Mulder suspects the evil government agents murdered his parents. Jackson hid himself and made people believe he shot himself in the head.Jackson visits the teen girls at the hospital and gets caught on camera.
Mulder and Scully are in a race against time agains the evil agents to find Jackson first. After the evil agents gun each other down, Jackson hides his face from Mulder and Scully while making his escape.
Before leaving cross-country, Jackson makes one last visit to Scully. Under his disguise, Jackson quotes her a memorable message from Malcolm X. To help her keep fighting the future, Jackson reminds Scully to stand for something, or else she will fall for anything.
Realizing their son is still alive, Mulder and Scully have hope; something to believe in.
