With rave reviews from audiences and critics alike, the CW Network continues their newest superhero drama Black Lightning, starring Cress Williams, with Episode 3: Lawanda: The Book of Burial. After being away in exile, Black Lightning has to face the secrets of his past in order to protect his city and his family.

After preventing a robbery, Anissa (Nafessa Williams) starts to figure out how to command her powers at an abandoned junkyard. With the community in an uproar over the death of Lawanda, Pastor Jeremiah Holt argues there needs to be a march for non-violence to bring everyone together. With the crime rate rising, Inspector Henderson (Damon Gupton) warns Pastor Holt that the 100 gang will not hesitate in attacking him.

After the death of Lala, Tobias Whale (Marvin ‘Krondon’ Jones III) meets with mob queen Lady Eve (Jill Scott). Tobias has to pay for the repercussions of Black Lightning’s return, but he still says the original is dead; he killed him. Lady Eve orders Tobias to strike fear at the march and assassinate the Pastor.

With the threat of Pastor Holt’s assassination looming, Peter Gambi (James Remar) trains Jefferson how to use his lighting powers. They start planning how to target the shooter during the peaceful march. Unfortunately, Lynn (Christine Adams) threatens to take the children if Jefferson returns to his old ways as Black Lightning.

Back at home, Jennifer (China Anne McClain) admits to her parents that she is thinking about having sex. The parents do not know how to respond when Jennifer reveals  she wants to have sex with her boyfriend, Khalil (Jordan Calloway). After his epic fail, Jefferson has no choice but to mess around with Khalil and play his mind games, to ruin the boy’s self-confidence.

Elsewhere, Anissa is having a flirtatious affair with Grace (Chantal Thuy). At a cosplay party, Anissa starts arguing with her girlfriend in front of Grace. Lynn admits that Anissa wasn’t particularly in love with her girlfriend, so their breakup doesn’t surprise her. Lynn will be waiting patiently for her daughter to share what’s really bothering her.

During the march, Black Lightning is able to take down two of the shooters. Tobias’ hit-woman strikes the Pastor and Jennifer’s boyfriend with a single bullet. The pastor then closes his eyes as he lies in Black Lightning’s arms.

In the aftermath of the shooting, the police and community are torn between rooting/hating Black Lightning. Having a change of heart, Lynn does believe the crime-ridden streets needs Black Lightning after all. Gambi isn’t ready to tell Jefferson that Tobias is involved and deletes the video evidence.

At the hospital, Jefferson learns that his daughter’s boyfriend will never walk again.

Black Lightning continues Tuesdays at 9pm on The CW.
