An hardboiled crime drama, Bone Parish Vol.1 (BOOM! Studios) sparks frightening horror imagery and thought-provoking social commentary on the war on drugs! This is one of personal favorites to have come out of 2018, this trade paperback collects the first four issues of Bone Parish.
A new drug is sweeping through the streets of New Orleans-one made from the ashes of the dead. Wars are being fought over who will control the supply, while the demand only rises. While the crime families wage war, users begin to experience terrifying visions of the dead coming back to life-through them.
We have 5 reasons why you should get Bone Parish Vol. 1:
5) The Wire Meets Sinister!
Imagine the there is new drug out there on the streets, But nobody talks about the secret ingredient inside this drug that the cooks are mixing with. The users are actually inhaling ashes from the dead.
4) The Writing!
Writer Cullen Bunn spotlights the war on drugs through the cooks, the kingpins, and the users. It’s an intricate crime saga told from different perspectives. Letterer Ed Dukeshire does a great job highlighting the various personalties, making you feel for the addicts and the struggle to feed their addictions.
3) The Artwork!

I don’t talk too much about the setting in previous reviews. I really want to highlight how artist Jonas Scharf depicts New Orleans, especially in the first installment. The illustrations do such wonderful job making you feel like you’re there.
2) The Colors!
A major highlight, colorist Alex Gumaraes really knows how to ramp up the drug hallucinations. The hallucinations are captured in such vivid tones. These particular pages make you feel like you’re in a surreal dream.
1) Horror & Crime!
One of my favorite panels from the upcoming Bone Parish issue#5.
