Highly recommended, Buffy The Vampire Slayer #2 (BOOM! Studios) cleverly combines romantic comedy and teen angst into a terrifying vampire thriller. Based on Joss Whedon’s groundbreaking series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, the pop culture phenomenon returns in a brilliantly charming and stylish reboot.
Drusilla, the self-proclaimed Mistress and her pet, Spike, make their debut with their sights set on Buffy! Meanwhile, Giles is determined to teach Buffy about her destiny, responsibility, blah blah…can someone tell him to chill? How bad can it get? Welcome back to the Hellmouth!
Here are 5 reasons why we love Buffy The Vampire Slayer #2:
5) What Happened Before!
Woking at a fast food joint, Buffy is even more tired as she’s trying to get good grades at school and stick to her nightly patrol. After making new friends, Willow and Xander, Buffy’s vampire slaying keeps getting in the way. The bloodsuckers have something new, protecting them from her wooden stakes.
4) The Writing!
Writer Jordie Bellaire establishes a new environment that will still feel familiar with longtime Buffy fans. I loved Kristine Sutherland’s portrayal of Joyce Summer, and I’m glad the hard-working mother has more to do in this series, especially with a new love interest. Letterer Ed Dukeshire wonderfully captures the theme of teen angst, echoing Xander’s loneliness as Willow forgets about him and leaves with her lover.
3) The Art!
I really loved the opening pages from artist Dan Mora as the illustrations dive into Buffy’s nightmare. In second installment reintroduces Cordelia Chase, Drusilla, and Spike in their updated character designs. Spike now has a slash, a physical mark, between his eyebrow. Drusilla looks vey terrifying as she shows off her vampire face.
2) The Colors!
Raul Angulo has such a vibrant color palette, especially when Cordelia Chase enters the pages. Charming and stylish as the popular girl in school, Cordelia has a mix of brownish and blonde tones to her hair. Notice how Xander is showered in blue highlights to emphasize his emotions.
1) A Must Read!
Readers will fall in love with Buffy The Vampire Slayer all over again, thanks to this impressive second installment. I can’t wait to read what happens next!
