Epic Pictures and Dread have put together their supernatural thriller, The Golem, starring Hani Furstenberg and Ishai Golen, for DVD and Blu-Ray. With the bonus extras, check out how The Paz Brothers turned their interesting concept into a horror film, an emotional roller-coaster, and a surprisingly moving family drama.
Set in 17th century Lithuania, Hanna (Hani Furstenberg) the wistful, conflicted wife of the local rabbi’s son Benjamin (Ishai Golen), secretly turns to Jewish mysticism and The Kabbalah to conjure up a dangerous entity to protect her community. But the creature she molds out of mud and summons to life echoes her tragic past and becomes so dangerously connected to its creator, that Hanna can’t see what a heartless monster she has fashioned from abject fear and desperate loathing.
Here are 5 reasons why you should own The Golem on Blu-Ray:
5) Hani Furstenberg!
First and foremost, you should watch actress Hani Furstenberg’s achingly heart-wrenching and powerfully moving performance as Hanna. Furstenberg’s leading role challenges herself to be grieving mother, a lonely housewife, and the mad scientist; her own version of Dr. Frankenstein. Furstenberg will truly break your heart with her somber expressions.
4) The Religious Symbolism!
I’m really glad there is commentary by screenwriter Ariel Cohen, The story by Ariel Cohen is inspired by The Golem of Prague, and yet, there’s clearly more to it. Cohen makes great use of the Jewish folklore, invokes themes of female empowerment, and captures Hannah’s journey through the five stages of grief.
3) Costume Drama!
Not only does The Golem work as a supernatural thriller and a family drama, the Paz Brothers crafted a period drama. Usually when I think of costume dramas, the clothing is always fanciful and focuses on the the rich. The wardrobe here represents the poor social class and has a rundown feel, echoing Hanna’s desperation in life.
2) An Unforgettable Viewing Experience!
The Golem is an unforgettable viewing experience, thanks to leading lady and interesting concept. I’m glad there are extras so that I continue to analyze the horror film further and learn how the filming was done.
