I love the single issue comics. I feel like we don’t get a ton these days. For a comedy especially, it’s formatted to a sitcom. A sitcom is 22 minutes. A comic is 20 pages. You can structure them the same say. I’ve been focused on really tight individual stories, that also have a through-line in the background.”
4) The Writing!
Writer Christopher Hastings has a superb knack for comedic dialogue, setting up the punchlines with precision. The nonstop banter between two brothers, who are always getting on each other’s nerves, is a major highlight. The lettering by Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou hilariously pokes fun at social media, especially with the comments on a Reddit page.
3) The Art!
Artist Ryan Browne absolutely nails the comedic timing with just the right poses. In a tight panel, Woody zaps people away when he points his finger guns at them. Notice how the comedy works in every page because Quantum happens to be the straight man, with his serious demeanor and reactions.
2) The Colors!
The vibrant colors by Ruth Redmond really stand out when the superhuman characters start using their powers. Quantum’s energy blasts are bright blue in the pages. The background turns to a green tone during the action-packed climatic finale.
