Just as the series is about to reach its 100th issue, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #99 (IDW Publishing) antes up on the suspense, the action, and surprise guest stars tenfold. As “City at War” steers closer to the 100th milestone event, the TMNT series delivers nostalgic throwbacks to remind itself and readers of its early beginnings.
City at War, Part 7. New York City descends into chaos after the unthinkable events of the last issue! Bishop is relentless in his pursuit, and a final showdown between Donatello and Metalhead will prove explosive!
Here are 5 reasons why you should read Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #99:
5) What Happened Before!
In order to take back control of the Foot Clan, Karai makes a surprising decision by kidnapping Splinter. Breaking off alliances with everyone, Karai drove her blade straight into Jennika. In order to save Jennika, the Turtles offered their own blood to save her. Wanting payback for Slash’s death, Raphael breaks off with his brothers to join the Mutanimals to attack Null.
4) The Writing!
In this extra-sized story by Kevin Eastman and Bobby Curnow, writer Tom Waltz focuses on the consequences of Raphael’s decision to betray his brothers. The pulse-pounding narrative contains surprise guest stars who have played a pivotal role in the TMNT legacy. Shawn Lee’s lettering captures the emotional high stakes as Splinter struggles to claw and punch his way out of his prison cell.
3) The Artwork!

Artist Dave Wachter does a fantastic job illustrating the chaos and mayhem as the citizens of New York have been transformed into mutants. Highlighting the social commentary, notice how Wachter depicts the police rounding up the confused and frightened. The shocking scene resembles something closely taken straight from the news.
2) The Colors!
Ronda Pattison’s color palette heightens the green shades and purple tones during Donatello’s brutal showdown with Metalhead. Notice how the color green is more vivid and maximizes the hits during the extreme closeups. The black tones add to the marks and fresh bruises on Donatello’s body.
