In its suspense-driven first part, Wonder Woman #82 (DC Comics) grippingly sets the stage for the supervillainess known as The Cheetah. Dr. Barbara Ann Minerva, aka The Cheetah, is now loose in the jungle, turning paradise into her own version of Hell.
Now that Cheetah has gained control of Themyscira, Wonder Woman must return home for a final showdown. Does she stand a chance against this scholar-turned-monster whose sole purpose was to enter this mythical realm? Meanwhile, Earth is left unprotected and some of Themyscira’s most vile creations have found their way there. What chaos awaits Wonder Woman if she ever returns?
Here are 5 reasons why you should read Wonder Woman #82:
5) The Writing!
Writer Steve Orlando captures the heartbroken Dr. Barbara Ann Minerva in an emotional crisis of faith. Wanting to believe again, Cheetah wants attention from the gods and will do anything until a higher power responds. Letterer Pat Brosseau bolds certain words in the dialogue to emphasize the complexity of an antagonist who sees herself as her own hero and a curse.
4) The Artwork!
Penciler Kieran McKeown captures the raw emotion of a former friend betrayed, driven by her uncontrollable rage. Inker Scott Hanna heightens the dark and sharp edges around Cheetah’s armor. In her character design, Cheetah resembles both an animal and a solider as she tortures her captured prey.
3) The Colors!
Colorist Romulo Fajardo Jr. accentuates the green tones of the jungle setting. Even when readers leave Themyscira and head back to Boston, to the location where Wonder Woman is, Fajardo Jr. still leaves a mark of green to continue the theme. Notice how half of Cheetah’s orange-skinned body sticks to the shadows.
2) Cheetah vs. Wonder Woman!
The first part of the epic narrative does a great job setting up the confrontation between the protagonist and antagonist. Readers will get to know Cheetah’s motivations and understand her fall from grace.
