A incredibly fun sci-fi read, X-O Manowar #1 (Valiant Entertainment) boasts tons of superhero action and hilarious one-liners from a stoic space adventurer. The first installment combines itself into a fantastic introduction for new readers and an exciting adventure for longtime fans.
“Torn from the past and bonded with a living alien armor, will X-O Manowar become the hero the world needs? As a futuristic force arises to destroy the planet, only this ancient warrior king has the courage to stand against impossible odds!”
Here are 5 reasons why you should read X-O Manowar #1:
5) The Writing!
Writer Dennis “Hopeless” Hallum captures our flawed protagonist, Aric, in a constant state of struggle. Stranded from a time not his own, Aric has trouble reconnecting to the rest of humanity. Letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou brings out the levity and witty humor during the banter between Aric and sentient armor, Shanara.
4) The Art!
In the opening pages, the phenomenal drawings by artist Emilio Laiso illustrates the two different sides of Aric. At his best, Aric tackles an entire alien spaceship in the vastness of space. At his worst, Aric gets hustled by a ground of neighborhood kids as he loses at a street game of basketball.
3) The Colors!
Colorist Ruth Redmond heightens the orange and blue tones of Aric’s armor. Redmond also colors in the dialogue captions whenever Shanara speaks. The color difference tells the reader what Aric is reacting to and manages to give Shanara a bit of personality.
2) A Hero From Another Time!
Even though civilization has evolved, Aric hasn’t. He doesn’t know how to connect with others; struggling to understand emotional responses and how kids thinks. But in a fight, Aric is comfortable with himself and never doubts himself.
