A must-have collection, Buffy The Vampire Slayer Vol. 1 (BOOM! Studios) captures pulse-pounding action through witty comedy and teen drama. Based on Joss Whedon’s groundbreaking series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, the pop culture phenomenon establishes itself as a charming and modern reboot.

This is the Buffy Summers you know, who wants what every average teenager wants: friends at her new school, decent grades, and to escape her imposed destiny as the next in a long line of vampire slayers tasked with defeating the forces of evil…only this time around, her world looks a lot more like the one outside your window.

Here are 5 reasons why you should get Buffy The Vampire Slayer Vol.1:

5) New & Classic!

High school is still hell and Buffy continues to struggle to get good grades at school. Just like the show was on the cusp with the internet, the comic taps into the social media craze. Notice how cyber-bullying and identity theft becomes a major theme in the narrative.

4) The Writing!

Writer Jordie Bellaire rdoes a great job driving the story with the father/daughter relationship between Giles and Buffy. Giles is much more demanding as a father figure, but his heart is really in the right place. Focusing on the teen drama, letterer Ed Dukeshire has found a way to heighten Xander’s lonely sense for friendship and unrequited love.

3) The Art!

I really enjoyed the action-packed pages from artist Dan Mora, but there’s one image that really sticks to my head. Notice the graffiti-painted wall that Buffy walks across from. In giant letters, as if for everyone to see, someone spray-painted the word, “Slayer,” on the wall.

2) The Colors!

Raul Angulo has such a vibrant color palette, especially when it comes to the hair styles. Spike’s blondish hair really strikes out in the pages. Cordelia Chase has a mix of brownish and blonde tones to her hair.

1) A Fantastic Read!

After establishing the characters and their relationships, the horror action strikes at the center of  Buffy The Vampire Slayer  Vol.1! There’s so much that the creative team can do with Buffy that I can’t wait to continue with this series!
