Announced at WonderCon 2019, DC UNIVERSE has staked the premiere date for their upcoming horror drama, Swamp Thing, starring Crystal Reed, Derek Mears and Andy Bean. The DC Comics superhero monster, created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson, joins DC Universe’s original live-action lineup, including Titans and Doom Patrol.
Abby Arcane (Crystal Reed) investigates what seems to be a deadly swamp-born virus in a small town in Louisiana, only to soon discover that the swamp holds mystical and terrifying secrets.
Here are 5 reasons we’re excited for Swamp Thing:
5) The Creative Team!
According to Deadline, the series is produced by James Wan (Aquaman)’s Atomic Monster in association with Warner Bros. TV. The pilot is written by Mark Verheiden (Falling Skies) and Dauberman Gary, Michael Clear and Len Wiseman. Known for his music on Crazy Rich Asians, Brian Tyler has signed on to score the upcoming DC Universe drama.
4) Underworld!
Are you a fan of Kate Beckinsale in the Underworld movies like I am? Len Wiseman, who directed Live Free or Die Hard and the Underwold: Blood Wars, will be helming the pilot. Wiseman also directed the pilot of Sleepy Hollow, capturing the one-of-a-kind chemistry between Tom Mison and Nicole Beharie.
3) The Monster!
Andy Bean will be playing scientist Alec Holland and Derek Mears will be playing the defender of The Green, Swamp Thing. Bean is phenomenal as Greg in Power. Mears did wonders as the unstoppable Jason Voorhees in the Friday the 13th remake and arm-wrestled Evil Dale Cooper in Twin Peaks: The Return.
2) The Comics!
With the cast including Maria Sten, Jeryl Prescott, Virginia Madsen, Will Patton, Henderson Wade, Kevin Durand and Ian Ziering, I’m so excited to see what the show creators will adapt. Will Swamp Thing be more existential like in Alan Moore and Stephen R. Bissette’s run? Or will Swamp Thing fight The Red like in Scott Snyder and Yanick Paquette’s run?
1) Wes Craven!
I love Wes Craven’s action-packed film version of Swamp Thing, staring Adrienne Barbeau and Ray Wise. Craven captured the setting and pioneered the one-take setups, something you wouldn’t typically see in the ‘80s.
Swamp Thing will premiere on the DC Universe May 31, 2019.
