Onion Skin, Top Shelf

Onion Skin (Top Shelf Productions) bursts with comedic and romantic energy as the pages become filled with delicious food. Writer/artist Edgar Camacho has captured such well-rounded characters and memorable imagery in a fun narrative that won Mexico’s first-ever National Young Graphic Novel Award.

Plot: “Rolando’s job was crushing his soul… and then it crushed his hand. Now he can barely get out of the house, marathoning TV and struggling to find meaning. Nera is a restless spirit who loves to taste everything life can offer, but sleeps in a broken-down food truck and can’t see a way to make her dreams come true. When their paths cross at a raucous rock show, the magical night seems to last forever.

“Together they throw caution to the wind, fix up the truck, and hit the road for a wild adventure of biker gangs, secret herbs, mystical visions, and endless possibilities. But have they truly found the spice of life? Or has Rolando bitten off more than he can chew?”

Here are 5 reasons why you should read Onion Skin:

5) The Writing!

There’s a biker/truck gang named the Hell Pigs. There’s also a criminal who dresses up as a clown. Then there’s the growing relationship between Rolando and Nero, who witness the up and downs of the food truck industry. Edgar Camacho has created such interesting characters who will captivate the reader’s attention.

4) The Opening!

After reading Onion Skin, every story from now on needs to start with a car chase. Camacho’s illustrations capture the fast turns and swerves as the food trucks drifts to a screeching halt.

3) The Artwork!

In a smart way, Camacho’s artwork does wonders when pointing out the highs and lows of creating your own business. Nera is trying to keep her food truck business alive but she has to deal with heavy competition and lack of resources.

2) The Food!

Just about every other page, there is an extreme closeup of the plate. The small details, such as the ingredients, are important because the food creates the Tex/Mex ambiance.

1) A Fun Read!

Onion Skin is filled with such delightful characters who readers will want to take fun adventure with. Plus the food looks incredibly delicious on the page!
