From the criminal world of Breaking Bad, AMC continues Season 4 of Better Call Saul with Episode 1: Smoke, starring Bob Odenkirk and Jonathan Banks. Is Jimmy McGill heading closer to his Saul Goodman persona after the death of his brother?
In the present day, Jimmy wakes up in the hospital and having fainting spell. On his way back, he realizes the taxi driver is from Albuquerque and might actually recognize him. Jimmy has a panic attack after he gets out of the taxi, in fear of getting caught.
In the past, Howard (Patrick Fabian) keeps calling Jimmy and leaves messages on his cell, but he refuses picks up. While Jimmy is helping out Kim (Rhea Seehorn) with her broken arm, Howard leaves a message telling them something bad has happened to Chuck.
Jimmy heads on over to his brother’s house and finds the firefighters there. The entire building has been destroyed from the fire. Jimmy knows the incident wasn’t caused by electrical problems; Chuck did this to himself.
While mourning for his brother, Jimmy is unable to say a word. Kim takes out a tequila bottle but she ends up drinking alone. Jimmy hasn’t said anything the entire night.
In the middle of the night, Nacho (Michael Mando) and Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) watch as their old cartel boss is taken away in the ambulance. Though he can prove his boss had a stroke, Nacho still has to get rid of the fake pills.
Nacho is about to get rid of the fake pills when Gus makes the call to the higher-ups. At their meeting, Gus warns there will be war and chaos coming from the subordinates. Because no one suspects him, Nacho will continue business as usual and keep the payments moving along.
After parking at the bridge, Nacho throws the fake pills into the river. He actually think the ordeal is finally over. Unfortunately, he doesn’t realize the cartel is keeping an eye on him and following him around.
Elsewhere, Mike (Jonathan Banks) finds retirement boring and needs to keep moving at his fake job. He steals his target’s ID pass and breaks into Madrigal’s offices.
This was an entire test for Mike. He wanted to see the security flaws at Madrigal’s offices. He calls himself the security consultant hired by Lydia, call his boss if you have problems.
Kim notices how quiet Jimmy is at the funeral. He is uncomfortable greeting the guests who offer their condolences. After the funeral, they find Howard sitting on the porch of their house, waiting for them.
After Howard breaks down and recounts Chuck’s last days, Jimmy is relieved and starts feeding the fish, asking if anyone wanted coffee.
Better Call Saul continues on AMC Mondays at 9pm.
