Before an all-new Season 3 episode of Blindspot airs Friday at 8pm on NBC, Villain Media has an exclusive interview with stars Sullivan Stapleton and Luke Mitchell. With Jane Doe (Jaimie, Alexander) caught in the crossfire, the fierce rivalry between Kurt Weller (Sullivan Stapleton) and Roman (Luke Mitchell) intensifies as the bioluminescent tattoo leads them closer to darker, hidden secrets.
Before audiences catch an all-new episode of Blindspot this Friday, November 10th at 8pm on NBC, Villain Media discussed the latest third season with Sullivan Stapleton aka Kurt Weller and Roman himself, Luke Mitchell. Now that Sandstorm has been defeated, something new is rising from the ashes. With the newlyweds as his targets, Roman is lurking in the shadows with a master plan of his very own. Sullivan and Mitchell spoke about how the newest threat to Jane and Kurt’s relationship will attempt to drive a wedge between them.
Over the past second season, the bond between Roman and Kurt has become twisted and warped. Because he is Jane’s long-lost brother, Kurt wanted to become a close ally, almost a friend, to an amnesiac Roman. But once his memories came flooding back, Roman discovered that his own sister had lied to him, even drugged him. Though he disappeared from their lives, Roman came back from the shadows as their most dangerous and feared enemy.
In our recap of the third season premiere, entitled Back to the Grind, Kurt and Roman found themselves in a heated battle, exchanging punches on top of a speeding boat. Mitchell described the pulse-pounding action-fest, “The fight scenes are interesting. They want to beat the crap out of each other!”
Stapleton added, “I’m fighting and whatever. I do that! That’s the fun part!”
I asked Mitchell, “Does Roman look at Weller as the man who married his sister? Or ‘Hey, you know these are the people who didn’t invite me to their wedding!’”
Mitchell laughed and answered, “A little bit of both! Some of that will be answered very quickly!”
By the time Jane and Kurt returned to the states, Roman was already waiting for them outside their apartment. While Jane was stashing away her money in a secret compartment, Roman had a gun directly pointed at Weller in their standoff. Caught at a disadvantage, Welller wasn’t quite sure if Roman would pull the trigger and shoot him at point-blank range. But was Roman merely just trying to protect himself?
“Maybe Weller wants to kill Roman.” Mitchell pointed out, “I don’t think Roman wants to kill them. I think he just wants to dismantle them.
What did Roman actually want from Kurt? During our recap of Enemy Bag of Tricks, we learned Roman picked out the bioluminescent tattoo for Kurt and his FBI team to solve. If Weller didn’t follow his orders, Roman would have revealed to Jane what really happened in Berlin. Later in the episode, Kurt and Jane realized Roman wants to tear them apart by using their own past and secrets against them.
Mitchell mentioned, “He’s not going to kill them. He could have done it. He could have killed them half the time. He doesn’t want to kill his sister.”
Not only did we witness the rise of Roman as The Big Bad, we also saw the intimate development of Jane and Kurt’s romantic relationship. Stapleton described the dynamic, “They’re exploring the personality of the characters. That to me is a nice challenge. But it’s fun!”
Though there was a big wedding, Jane had to go into hiding after discovering there was a hit on her. Kurt dedicated his wealth and resources into finding his missing wife’s whereabouts. For the past 18 months, Kurt was holding onto his wife’s wedding ring, hoping to one day give it back to Jane.
Stapleton said, “The challenging part is to cover this relationship. And relationships are work. The more work you put into it, the better the relationship is. That’s where it’s at!”
At the end of Enemy Bag of Tricks, Roman has stolen an innocent man’s identity and wiped his victim’s bank account clean. Elsewhere, Jane revealed the stash of money she had hidden away. Though Jane opened up to her husband, Kurt hasn’t come clean about his previous encounter with Roman. Why does Kurt want to keep Jane from finding out about Berlin?
Mitchell teased, “It’s about Roman flipping everything on its end. Every relationship you had in season two has completely changed. Because now, he’s got secrets on everyone. And he’s trying to torture them. He wants to hurt them. And he’s going to do it.”
In the third episode of the third season, airing Friday November 10th, entitled Upside Down Craft, Jane and Weller are on the hunt to take down a collective of dangerous computer hackers. Patterson (Ashley Johnson) and Rich Dotcom (Ennis Esmer) find a way to work together. Will they be able to put aside their differences and keep their explosive secret hidden from the others?
Blindspot airs Fridays at 8pm on NBC.
