Neo noir with attitude, readers will absolutely love the pulp and grittiness behind Dick Tracy: Dead or Alive #1 (IDW Publishing). The most iconic comic-strip heroes of all time is back in an eye-popping reboot!

The All-American detective just made the biggest collar of his career, and it only cost him his job! But now the honest cop has packed his bags for “the city by the lake,” and its criminals better watch out!

Here are 5 reasons why you should get Dick Tracy: Dead or Alive #1:

5) The History!

I became interested in the yellow trench-coat wearing detective after seeing Warren Beatty’s cinematic adaptation. This was a comic book movie that had an all-star legends cast, which included A Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, and Kathy Bates. It was a visual marvel that made me want to read the comic strips afterwards.

4) The Writing!

With Michael Allred and Lee Allred on writing duties, they capture a disillusioned Dick Tracy, the one good cop who made the wrong arrest. Admitting he’s old-fashioned, Tracy believes there may be hope for him in the city by the lake. Letterer Shawn Lee capitalizes the words, like “Eat lead, copper!” when a hail of bullets start flying.

3) The Artwork!

The pencils by Rich Tommaso add little details to the smallest objects, like Tracy’s police badge. The inks from Mike Allred add the expressive lines to the character’s faces. The action moves at a fast pace with wide and medium shots as a trigger-happy Tracy chases after his feeling suspect.

2) The Colors!

Colorist Laura Allred has such a bright and vivid palette. In the opening panel, notice how the purple vehicle stands out among the gray airplanes. Automatically the first thing you see, the eye-popping yellow tones stand out when Tracy appears in the pages.

1) A Great Read!

Moving at breakneck speed, Dick Tracy: Dead or Alive #1 vividly saturates the crime and characters our hero deals with. For new readers who have never heard of Dick Tracy, this is the perfect place to start.
