Rich Douek, Road Bones #1,

A riveting first installment, Road of Bones #1 (IDW Publishing) is a captivating read that twists the prison break genre within a harrowing survival tale. This is a four-issue survival tale manages to put together horror, history, and Russian folklore.

The worst prison in the world – the Siberian Gulag of Kolyma – is merely the gateway to even darker terrors, as escapees stumble over hundreds of miles of frozen tundra on a descent into delirious madness.

Here are 5 reasons you should get Road of Bones #1:

5) The Themes!

A helpless man is captured and tortured in a prison where anything goes. There is an interrogation scene that is absolutely heartbreaking to read. You think this type of mental and physical torture would only happen in fiction, but nope, reality is too close to home.

4) The Writing!

Writer Rich Douek tells the survival tale from Roman’s POV. We’re always inside Roman’s mind-space as he is pushed to his limits. Prison is driving hm to the point of madness, leaving him hopeless. The lettering by Justin Birch captures the bleakness and grittiness within the Siberian Gulag of Kolyma.

3) The Artwork!

Artist Alex Cormack presents a cold and insufferable landscape where snow never seems to end. Cormack does a great job presenting Roman’s character design after his face is beaten to a pulp. Roman is still recognizable even with all those cuts and bruises.

2) The Colors!

Notice how the light source is either coming from the snow or from a flashlight. White is a major theme in the color palette because the snow is never-ending. Even if you escape the prison, the escapees still have to cross the snowy mountains.

1) A Riveting Thriller!

Road of Bones #1 is a thought-provoking thriller from start to finish. The last page will truly shock the reader!

Road of Bones #1 arrives in stores on May 22, 2018.
