Writer Andy Diggle has cleverly written two compelling narratives into one. The first narrative introduces a mysterious woman named Alyssa. The second story follows the unexpected return of Jack. Halfway through the riveting tale, Diggle connects both characters in a surprising collision.
4) An Exciting Origin Story!
The first installment introduces the world of Shadowman and its black magic. With a surprising twist at the climax, I think Diggle will take the series itself into uncharted territory. I’m really interested in finding out how Diggle will connect Shadowman to the rest of the Valiant Universe.
3) The Artwork!
Artist Stephen Segovia captures the urban setting and the swamp grounds in the opening pages. Segovia focuses on the shadows to illustrate the monster designs. In his first appearance, notice the detail in the wear and tear in Shadowman’s costume.
2) The Colors!
Colorist Ulises Arreloa does a fantastic job with his monster work. The hideous gigantic creature is hidden in the darkness and the only light source comes from its glowing red eye. Arreloa’s bright tones highlight the magic symbols that pop up.

Overall, Shadowman #1 takes surprising twists in its exciting origin story. I can’t wait to get my hands on the second issue and find out what’s to come for this series!
