In the first installment, The TMNT and Master Splinter are attacked in their lair by a group of cyborgs led by the female ninja called Pimiko. Raphael ends up with his face scarred and burnt. Master Splinter’s communication with his children is cut off. Donatello finds himself falling from the sky, without a parachute to save him.
4) The Writing!
Writer Gary Carlson explores the relationship of the Turtles as they are divided. Though defeated, the remaining Turtles are able to find humor and a sense of solace as they stick together. Letterer Chris Eliopoulos captures Donatello’s frantic narration in the opening pages.
3) The Artwork!
Artist Frank Fosco illustrates the Turtles fighting in these intense action-packed sequences, which always end up bloody. Right from the first page, Fosco captures Donatello drenched in blood. The inks by Andrew Pepoy and Chance Wolf highlight the the tombstones and religious symbols as the Turtles find sanctuary in the cemetery.
2) The Colors!
Red is a major theme in colorist Adam Guzowski’s vivid palette. Seeing Donatello soaked in blood is really an eye-opener. The blue tones highlight Leonardo’s spiritual visit into the astral plane.
