An exciting adventure, Olympia #1 (Image Comics) delivers pulse-pounding superhero action in a riveting coming-of-age tale. The first installment is an incredibly moving homage to Jack Kirby art and a nostalgic tribute to classic superhero comics from the Silver Age.
Elon is a latchkey kid who spends his days alone reading comic books—until his favorite superhero, Olympian, comes crashing off the page and into reality! But as he nurses his wounded and delirious hero back to health, he discovers Olympian isn’t the only thing that came through… something evil followed him.
Here are 5 reasons why you should read Olympia #1:
5) Jack Kirby!
In the comic book within a comic book, the story is one helluva nostalgic throwback to Jack Kirby’s imprint on cosmic mythology. Kirby’s work on Thor and The Fourth World is a major influence on the sci-fi narrative.
4) The Writing!
From a story by Tony Pires, writer Curt Pires grounds the plot from the perspective from the underdog, Elon. From a broken-down home, Elon seeks out hope, even a father figure, from the small town he’s stuck living in. With the lettering by Micah Myers, the quirky humor stands out with Olympian because the dialogue feels like Elon has an imaginary best friend.
3) The Artwork!
Artist Alex Diotto has an interesting character design for Olympian. The armor that Olympian wears has an animal’s snarling face at the center. With a beard and long blonde hair, Olympian demonstrates the rugged looks and muscular strength Elon wishes he had.
2) The Colors!
Colorist Dee Cunniffe adds such bold tones to separate reality and fantasy. Notice how the armor for Olympian is bright and shiny in the comic book. When Elon meets Olympian, his armor has lost its shine and the brightness has faded.
1) An Enchanting Read!
An enchanting read, Olympia #1 packs so much heart, humor, and action in its compelling first issue. I can’t wait to find out how Olympia continues!
Olympia #1 arrives in stores November 20th, 2019.
