Meet Punk Mambo, a hard-living voodoo priestess who grew up in London, then relocated to Louisiana’s Bayou Country. She’s a mystical mercenary for hire. Punk Mambo was investigating a series of abductions in the New Orleans gutter punk scene, when she uncovered a bigger mystery in Haiti.
4) The Writing!
After suffering from a major beatdown, writer Cullen Bunn steers Punk Mambo towards to gaining her self-confidence back. Punk Mambo is going to need more than a few tricks and spells during her final boss battle. Dave Sharpe’s lettering reveals Punk Mambo’s inner thoughts as she narrates the final fight through captions.
3) The Art!
In a fantastic two-pager, artist Adam Gorham does a great job capturing the final boss battle in the astral plane. There’s a debris flying in the air and a screaming skull looking directly at the reader. In the illustration, Punk Mambo looks like she is floating, almost flying, in mid-air.
2) The Colors!
José Villarrubia’s color palette uses blue and white tones used to portray the spirits in the astral plane. Then there’s a zigzag of yellow lightning striking at Punk Mambo’s back. There’a also the back smoke monster diving straight into he chest.
