Shadowman #1, Valiant

A high octane introduction, Shadowman #1 (Valiant Entertainment) delivers an exciting supernatural thriller with engaging action and a promising lead. New readers will be able to jump on in with this fresh and entertaining take on the Shadowman series

Plot: “Jack Boniface is SHADOWMAN, a powerful protector who keeps humanity safe from the demons that claw at the fabric of our reality. The forces of darkness are awakening and they are hungry for life. Will Shadowman be able to save us all, or will the darkness devour the world as we know it?”

Here are 5 reasons why you should read Shadowman #1:

5) A Fresh Take!

In an interview with Valiant, writer Cullen Bunn discussed redefining Shadowman and said, “This is an approach to Shadowman that I don’t think readers have seen before. He’s more powerful now, embarking on globe-hopping adventures, and encountering threats that will have a long-lasting impact on the Valiant Universe. And these stories, while full of superheroic action, are tales of horror. Jon and Jordie are bringing these stories to life in a way that will make this book read and look unlike any other comic on the shelves. It really is shaping up into something special.”

4) The Writing!

What I absolutely enjoyed about Cullen Bunn’s writing is his biting satirical commentary about class division. Through Jack Boniface, Bunn has something to say about the exploitation of regular people by high society. The lettering by Clayton Cowles makes sure to highlight Jack’s thoughts and reactions to the situation.

3) The Art!

I am a huge fan of this younger and urban take of Jack Boniface. Jack’s character design by artist Jon Davis-Hunt feels more street and underground. When Davis-Hunt illustrates the horror, the Lovecraftian monsters appear straight out of cult classics, like Brian Yuzna’s Society

2) The Colors!

Colorist Jodie Bellaire separates the fantastical and the realistic overtones by two different palettes. The higher class, such as the wealthy elite, is represented by gray hues. When the horror strikes, the red and yellow tones appear to pop out of the page.

1) A Great Start!

The first issue of Shadowman has an interesting story that horror fans will definitely follow along with. With its horror touch, this Shadowman series rules!

Available for preorders until April 5th, Shadowman #1 arrives in stores on April 28th, 2021.
