The Mooncats: A Motion Picture Collective presents the timely and stylish short film Conception, starring Eva Hamilton and Samm Todd. Audiences are in for a dark and twisted look at the process of becoming pregnant.
THE PLOT: “In 2029, a woman who has lost her daughter and her husband to suicide discovers an evil presence hiding in one of her husband’s prized possessions.
“While American democracy has crumbled under the pressure of a constitutional crisis and the United States ceases to exist as we know it. UAP, UFO, and Extraterrestrial phenomena are simultaneously on the upsurge. In the midst of such, the widow of a Veteran grapples with this much darker version of her reality while ridding herself of her husband’s more paranoid, mid-2020s convention memorabilia. When she finds a life-sized, area-51-esque alien prop, something malevolent begins to punch a hole into her world.”
Here are five reasons why you have to watch Conception:
5. The Social Commentary!
When Conception hits its stride, the narrative makes its points across to the viewers without being preachy. The themes highlight the inherent value and importance of female voices. While doing its message justice, the story also serves as a thrilling tribute to The Twilight Zone.
4. Eva Hamilton!
Actress Eva Hamilton delivers a heartfelt performance as the widowed woman. Her facial expressions capture a tragic character caught in an extraordinary situation. Hamilton creates a fully-fleshed character who has lost her voice and finds herself forced to deal with decisions thrust upon her.
3. The Potential!
The dystopian short film has enough potential material to become a feature. The character arcs, especially Hamilton’s, can be extended without feeling like they are being dragged. Of course, it was great to see actress Samm Todd (Trick R’ Treat) again. This critic hopes to see Todd again in a bigger role.
2. The Direction!
Conception makes some interesting and experimental choices in pacing, lens, and editing. The somber tone of the film remains intact, while its thrilling sequences keep viewers engaged.
1. Smart & Thrilling!

Conception finds that delicate balance of thrilling its audience and delivering a thought-provoking message. As always, Eva Hamilton delivers a must-see and worthwhile performance.
This is a private advanced screening of Conception. The short film will be making the festival rounds before a streaming release.
