With April O’Neil taking center stage, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #98 (IDW Publishing) antes up on the suspense and pushes up the dramatic tension. As “City at War” steers closer to the 100th issue, the TMNT series continues the origin story of a new character to the popular franchise.
“City at War,” Part 6. As power in New York City’s underworld is consolidated, the populace goes to the polls to potentially elect Baxter Stockman as Mayor. A devastating act will change the city forever, and Raphael must choose which side he’s on!
Here are 5 reasons why you should read Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #98:
5) What Happened Before!
Mayoral candidate Dr. Baxter Stockman promises independence for New York City. Use your voice in the election and vote for action, not words. Pick up the latest issue of #TMNT to follow the race for the next mayor of New York City. #RoadTo100 pic.twitter.com/Gs3aa1JNF3

Karai makes a surprising decision by kidnapping Splinter for leadership of the Foot Clan. Breaking off alliances with everyone, Karai drove her blade straight into Jennika. In order to save Jennika, the Turtles offered their own blood to save her. Wanting payback for Slash’s death, Raphael breaks off with his brothers to join the Mutanimals to attack Null.
4) The Writing!
A LOT is going on within the story by Kevin Eastman and Bobby Curnow, that writer Tom Waltz is able to give readers a chance to breathe when April O’Neil takes the spotlight. April has the big sister role to play for the Turtles because they are under so much pressure and anxiety. Shawn Lee’s lettering captures the sibling rivalry between Raphael and Leonardo as they argue over their next move.
3) The Artwork!
Artist Michael Dialynas does a fantastic job with Splinter’s wide-eye facial expressions as his sadness takes over. Not only has Karai overpowered him, he has mentally wrecked him as well. Dialynas captures April’s strength and feistiness as she delivers her own power play against Baxter Stockman.
2) The Colors!
Ronda Pattison’s color palette for Baxter Stockman’s election campaign is a spot-on reflection to the recent debates of the upcoming presidential race. The pages look like a political thriller starring the Turtles. I’d like to see more of this if this subplot continues.
1) A Must Read!
A thrilling read, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #98 delivers an unexpected twist in the very last page. We’re so close to issue #100!
