Paramount Home Media Distribution has released the powerfully moving and suspenseful The Haunting of Hill House Extended Director’s Cut, starring Carla Gugino and Kate Siegel, onto Blu-ray and DVD. Director Mike Flanagan eloquently expresses so much passion into the themes of grief, tragedy, and addiction in his adaptation of the classic novel of Shirley Jackson.
When they were children, the Crain siblings grew up in what would go on to become the most famous haunted house in the country. Now adults, they are forced back together in the face of tragedy and must finally confront the ghosts of their past. Some of those ghosts still lurk in their minds, while others may actually be stalking the shadows of Hill House.
Here are 5 reasons why you should get The Haunting of Hill House Extended Director’s Cut Blu-Ray:
5) The Extras!
Yes, you can watch the show on Netflix and you should. Budding filmmakers will want to learn about the behind-the-scenes trivia, anecdotes, and insights from Flanagan himself in his four commentary tracks. There are also three extended episodes with never-before-seen footage.
4) The Bent-Neck Lady!
Full of charisma and warmth, Victoria Pedretti delivers an emotionally charged performance as the youngest sibling, Eleanor “Nell” Crain. The devastatingly tragic twist at the end of fifth episode will leave you floored! Pedretti carries the entire episode with such kinetic energy and never falters.
3) Two Storms!
Two Storms is such a major undertaking because it’s very theatre-like and the visuals have to be engaging enough during the long takes. Everybody in the cast is at their peak — including Timothy Hutton, Michiel Huisman, Elizabeth Reaser, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Gugino, and Siegel — as they deliver an unforgettable performance. I’m glad the special features pay enough attention to the sixth episode.
2) The Ghosts!
The 43 ghosts come alive thanks to Robert Kurtzman, who was Makeup Effects Co-Department Head alongside Staci Witt. There’s a desaturated look to the ghosts and the prosthetics give that sunken bone structure appearance.
1) An Essential Director’s Cut!
The Haunting of Hill House Extended Director’s Cut will not only scare you; it will move you to tears. Viewers are definitely in for a treat.
The Haunting of Hill House Extended Director’s Cut is available now on DVD and Blu-Ray.
