Kid Lobotomy #1 (IDW Publishing/Black Crown) is a terrifically twisted read, that’s genuinely startling at the same time. Not only does writer Peter Milligan and artist Tess Fowler’s Kid Lobotomy push the shock value, there are such eccentric characters in this unusual and artistic storyline.

A rich hotelier, Big Daddy, a cracked echo of King Lear, appoints his youngest descendant to manage The Suites, a peculiar hotel located behind the Black Crown Pub. Affectionately known as Kid, his good looks and swagger can’t hide a rough childhood of strange therapies and brain operations. Because of his awakened inner demons and psychodramas, Kid is eminently qualified to perform lobotomies. Bordering on as a failed rockstar and successful madman, he gets one last change to prove his worth—and regain his sanity—by turning the hotel that was once his childhood sanctuary into a lucrative business. There are a host of obstacles—including his own sister—who would love nothing more than to see him fail miserably.

Here are 5 reasons why you should get Kid Lobotomy #1:

5) The Writing!

Writer Peter Milligan has a satirical voice that is quite smart and frenetic. The world of the Suites dives deep into its set of taboos, letting readers take a visit into Milligan’s dark and demented imagination. Milligan plays around with the unstructured narrative, telling the story from the point-of-view of the unreliable narrator.

4) The Artwork!

Milligan’s trippy storyline is matched perfectly with Tess Fowler’s luscious illustrations. Just when you think the story is grounded in reality, Fowler emphasizes on the surreal and abstract. I was caught by surprise by Fowler’s vivid interpretation of a shape-shifting character.

3) The Trippy Colors!

Colorist Lee Louridge keeps the panels flowing inside a lucid dream. The palette is striking due to its mixture of bright primary colors. When Kid commands the stage as a rock star, notice how the pink tone continues onto the next page with The Suite’s logo.

2) Black Crown!

Kid Lobotomy is Black Crown’s official debut work. The new imprint from IDW has the stamp of former Vertigo editor Shelly Bond. The pages are filled with a wild mishmash of ideas, rebelling in anarchy, sex, and drama. I can’t wait for what comes next from Black Crown!

1) A Demented & Wild Read!

Kid Lobotomy #1 grabs the attention of the reader with its satirical writing and poppy artwork. Kid Lobotomy throws decency out the window and basks in its gallows humor.

Kid Lobotomy #1 is out in stores on October 18, 2017.
