The official Marvel graphic novel, The PROX Transmissions, is an ambitiously inventive read that blends together as a sci-fi and rock opera piece. Wild and fun at the same time, the sci-fi premise works amazingly well with its multimedia format.
The PROX Transmissions follows Dr. Stephen Browning as he intercepts a secret transmission from beyond space. Realizing Starset’s world is laced in dystopia and disaster, Dr. Browning finds himself in chaos. The incoming message actually proves to be a dire warning from the future. Browning reluctantly seeks help from Dr. Aston Wise before embarking on a quest to discover the meaning of the message.
Here are 5 reasons why you should get The Prox Transmissions:
5) We love Starset!
If you love the music from Starset, then you already know frontman Dustin Bates loves to put his touch one varying; from lead singer to songwriter to keyboardist! What music fans here is something close to cinematic rock. When reading the text and themes, you feel like Bates is composing the soundtrack to an epic sci-fi blockbuster.
4) Spider-Man 2099!
Writer Peter David (Spider-Man 2099) knows how to give characters their own personality, much like he did with the X-Factor team members. Adapting Bates’ ideas, David develops the duality between Dr. Stephen Browning and Dr. Aston Wise. When Browning is quiet and focused, Wise is loud and chaotic. Browning is more a traditional adventurer, whereas Wise is a roguish anti-hero.
3) The Artwork!

The vivid imagery comes from artist Mirko Colak (Red Skull). Notice in the closeups how Browning studies the people around him by their facial expressions. The splash pages are filled with detail as Colk illustrates the scientific and technical aspects.
2) The Colors!
I love the nightclub sequence where colorists Carlos Lopez and Rachelle Rosenberg keep the grounded tones in purple. Not how the palette changes from purple to blue. Notice how Dana’s hair and wardrobe match with shades of red.
