A giant robot extravaganza, Mech Cadet Yu #1 (BOOM Studios) is an endearing and fun-filled sci-fi adventure with tons of heart. Not only will the underdog storytelling resonate with readers, the stunning artwork captures the whimsical excitement of watching robots soar through the sky.
Once a year, giant robots from outer space come to Earth and bond with young cadets from the elite Sky Corps Academy. Their cadets are trained to help defend the world from the terrifying alien race known as the Sharg. But this year, the wrong kid gets picked and Sky Corps Academy will never be the same.
Here are 5 reasons why you should read Mech Cadet Yu #1:
5) A Great Introduction!

In the first issue, writer Greg Pak (Totally Awesome Hulk) delivers the fun and excitement of being a big fish in a small pond. Bullied for being different, Stanford Yu is picked on by society and the insensitive adults around him. As a diverse protagonist, Stanford stands up for himself because he can dream bigger.
4) A Hero You Can Root For!
Artist Takeshi Miyazawa (Ms. Marvel) depicts the innocence and heart within Stanford just before he meets his giant robot companion. The character design of Stanford reminds me Ash Ketchum because of his wide-eyed expressions and bright red cap. The artwork illustrates the ideals of inner childhood memories, such as the glee and excitement of being a flying superhero.
3) World-Building!
We’ve got a ton of great #newcomics hitting shops tomorrow, including the launch of #MechCadetYu and #AdventureTime/#RegularShow! #NCBD pic.twitter.com/uhne2NU9NA

The warm colors by Triona Farrell takes readers to the isolated environment of Los Robos, Arizona. The vast mountains and desert landscape are always drawn in the background. The hierarchy of Sky Corps Academy is quickly established through the young cadet named Park.
2) The Robot Humor!
Showing off its quirky humor, the robo that picks Stanford has a piece missing from his head. Because of his glitch, the giant robot is unwanted by his peers. In a comedic and slapstick panel, the robot gets slapped upside the head.
