A fun filled robot extravaganza, Mech Cadet Yu #2 (BOOM Studios) is a genuinely  endearing and action-packed coming-of-age tale. Greg Pak’s underdog story will resonate with young readers and the Takeshi Miyazawa’s artwork captures the excitement of flying robots.

As we previously mentioned, giant robots from outer space came to Earth and started bonding with young cadets from the elite Sky Corps Academy. Their union is to help defend the world from the terrifying alien race known as the Sharg. The young cadets know it is a great honor to be chosen. But this year, the wrong kid somehow gets picked and Sky Corps Academy will never be the same.

Here are 5 reasons why you should read Mech Cadet Yu #2:

5) An Awesome Followup!

In the second installment, Stanford Yu returns with his mech, surprising the generals and other cadets. Standord’s first day at school comes with bitter rivalry from his fellow classmates and unexpected praise from his teachers. Stanford and his mech will have to see if they can keep up and make the grade.

4) Mama Bear!

Writer Greg Pak does a wonderful job developing the relationship between Stanford and his mother. Standford’s mother knows her son will enter a military school, but she also wants a better life for her child. She still fights for him, even though she doesn’t agree with his decisions.

3) Robots Have Emotions!

Artist Takeshi Miyazawa depicts the emotional ranges of the giant robot companions. The Stanford and his mech have a brotherly relationship that Miyazawa sweetly captures in his illustrations.  The giant robot has to protect Stanford, even when he wants to be his best friend.

2) The World-Building!

From the school uniforms to the mechs, colorist Triona Farrell has a vivid palette with the primary tones. The giant robots easily stand out by their design and color, such as green and red.  The vast mountains and desert drawn in the background evokes a brownish western landscape.

1) A Genuine Fun Read!

A fun and quick read, Mech Cadet Yu #2 is undeniably heartfelt and visually stunning. I’m very excited for the upcoming third installment after reading the cliffhanger!
