Beautiful Canvas #1 (Black Mask Studios) is an action-packed crime thriller pumped with blood, femme fatales, and bullets. In the blood-soaked first issue, writer Ryan Lindsay (Negative Space) and artist Sami Kivelä (Chum) introduce readers to a hard-bitten assassin with a deep moral crisis.

Beautiful Canvas follows Lon Eisley, a hit-woman hired to kill a small child. Lon gets her latest orders after discovering her girlfriend pregnant. In a bold declaration of uncertainty, she saves the boy and hits the road. Her boss clearly wants the boy dead for a reason and will stop at nothing. This warped crime dystopia dives into the emotional dichotomy of creator/destroyer as Lon attempts to connect the two very different worlds she now inhabits.

Here are 5 reasons why you should buy Beautiful Canvas #1:

5) An Interesting Character!

Writer Ryan Lindsay has crafted an interesting female protagonist who isn’t afraid to show her vulnerability. When she’s in the midst of action, Lon demonstrates her tough side without hesitation. Lindsay then writes these sweet and touching moments to display Lon’s softer side. The narrative drops Lon in this morally complex journey of self-discovery.

4) The Artwork!

Artist Sami Kivelä illustrates the badass character with a fierce and punkish outlook. Each hit has taken a personal toll on Lon’s personality. Kivela allows readers to see the emotional turmoil lurking inside Lon’s unhinged mind. Colorist Triona Farrell has a vivid palette that blends the surreal with the reality.

3) The Standoff To Remember!

In an exciting action sequence, Lindsay and Kivelä have put together a suspenseful standoff between knife and gun. The panel layout captures the intensity and suspense of Lon’s kill, as if it were a single tracking shot. Kivelä’s artwork highlights the smallest detail, creating a cinematic slow-motion effect.

2) The Animal/Hybrid Squad!

With a small child child to protect, Lon finds herself attacked by an animal/hybrid mercenary squad. While Lindsay gives each member quirky one-liners, Kivelä has a different character design that fits their popping personality. I don’t want to say too much but this is an exciting third act!

1) Definitely Worth Buying!

With a kickass female anti-hero, writer Ryan Lindsay and artist Sami Kivelä deliver a memorable first issue. Thanks to its action-packed story and eye-catching drawings, Beautiful Canvas #1 has a winning blend of character drama and dark humor.
