While Julian (Elisha Henig) is being held in foster care, Vera (Carrie Coon) is questioned by Harry and Heather Novack (Natalie Paul). Vera reveals she lives with Moonwood, a utopian community. Harry notices that the name raises suspicions from Heather.
In flashbacks, Heather is making out with her girlfriend when they decide to run away. They stumble upon the Moonwood community during the night. While hiding the bushes, they are spotted by a member and are asked to join the campfire. Her girlfriend was seduced by Moonwood.
Back in the present, Harry and Heather stall for time as Vera attempts to gain custody of her son. Though she has her birth records, Vera doesn’t have any school documents, nor any residence papers. The judge has a hard time with Vera, leaving Julian at foster care.
With Vera on the sidelines, Harry attempts to have a conversation with Julian. He reveals to Julian that he has a beard to make himself to seem strong. He thinks his clean-shaven face makes him less imposing and appear weak.
Julian then reveals he has nightmares about a hooded figure. The hooded figure puts his hand into his chest and pulls out his intestines. Harry believes this proves Julian is being physically abused at Moonwood.
Heather’s boss finally relents and allows the detectives to search Moonwood. Harry gets a phone call in the middle of the night. Vera warns Harry that she knows who the real monster is.
At Moonwood, Harry starts to question the other members, but they refuse to share much information. Heather notices one of the members was at the motel, but she doesn’t see her former girlfriend anywhere.
Harry decides to distract Vera while Heather roams around undetected. Vera mentions there is a shadow the bad side, within everyone. This is the same shadow that she wants Julian to explore.
Heather discovers a large black rock hidden in the farmhouse. What are they worshipping?
