A definite must-dread for horror fans, 30 Days of Night #2 (IDW Publishing) is an incredibly fast-paced and captivating exercise in vampire action. Writer Steve Niles and artist Piotr Kowalski reimagine the original comic book series that eventually became a blockbuster movie franchise.

As we previously mentioned, the sun has set over an isolated Alaskan township and will not rise again for the next thirty days. A new evil emerges from the shadows to terrorize the tow. After a series of strange events and horrific killings, the question becomes, what lurks in the shadows?

Here are 5 reasons why you should get 30 Days of Night #2:

5) It’s Not A Remake!

Right off the bat, writer Steve Niles is telling the readers that this story is not a shot-for-shot remake. Yes we do meet Sheriff Eben and Deputy Stella but the narrative isn’t beholden to their relationship; it’s so much more than that. Niles wants to make sure even longtime followers are in for a surprise.

4) The Town Is Alive!

Niles wants readers to gradually get to know the Barrow residents of the isolated Alaskan township. It’s just supposed to an average, uneventful night for the people in Barrow. Then something out of the extraordinary slowly pops out!

3) The Art!

Artist Piotr Kowalski highlights the emotional moments in the illustrations. Deputy Stella has to keep a tough surface in front of the Barrow residents, refusing to break down in front of them. There is a shot from the original that Kowalski brilliantly puts his own spin on.

2) The Colors!

Colorist Brad Simpson captures a grounded setting, focusing on the witness of the snow. I love how the tones hint at the vampires, who are draped in shadows, in the last pages. It doesn’t say too much and yet it will get horror fans excited about what’s to come.

1) A Must Read!

With 30 Days of Night #2, the premise and art continues to be major selling points of the series. The illustrations deliver a terrifying horror atmosphere that I hope continues in the next installment.
