With two episodes remaining, The CW Network has renewed the superhero drama Black Lightning, starring Cress Williams, for Season 2. After being away in exile, Black Lightning has returned to face the secrets of his past in order to protect his city and his family.

High school principal Jefferson Pierce Williams, once retired from his superhero persona after seeing the effects it had on his ex-wife Lynn (Christine Adams). Now he is forced to become a vigilante again after the rise of the local gang called the 100 leads. Can he save the community of Freeland from the unstoppable mob boss Tobias Whale (Marvin Jones III,)?

Here are 5 reasons we are excited for Black Lightning’s Season 2 renewal:

5) You Get Renewed! And You Get Renewed!

According to Variety, the CW Network has renewed Black Lightning, The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Supernatural, Dynasty, and Riverdale.  CW president Mark Pedowitz mentions the upcoming expansion, “As The CW expands to a six-night, Sunday through Friday schedule next season, we are proud to have such a deep bench of great returning series for 2018-19. By picking these ten series up for next season, we have a terrific selection of programming to choose from when we set our fall schedule in May, with more still to come. And I’m especially happy that we’ll continue to work with the incredibly talented casts, producers, and writers who create the series our fans are so passionate about.”

4) A Family Drama!

I love the writing because the show has become a family drama full of superheroes! A metaphor for teen angst, the youngest daughter, Jennifer Pierce (China Anne McClain), is fighting against herself now that her superpowers have formed. Anissa Pierce (Nafessa Williams)  is learning about self-identity and social justice as she makes a name for herself as Thunder.

3) The Social Commentary!

Showrunner Salim Akil keeps his finger on the pulse on cultural revelance, spotlighting Charlottesville and Black Lives Matter. In the recent Black Jesus, Jefferson suffers through police corruption and racism as he is framed for the drugs planted in his car. Even with the help of Inspector Henderson (Damon Gupton), he was humiliated and abused by the crooked cops. It’s scary how even superheroes are weighed down by social injustices.

2) Ajax!

James Remar starred in my all-time favorite movie, The Warriors. Remar has done a fantastic job as Peter Gambi, the Alfred Pennyworth of the show. Not only does Gambi has to heal Jefferson’s wounds, he also has to create the hi-tech outfits for the whole superhero family.

1) The Ultimate Crossover!

According to Syfy Wire, Stephen Amell also wants Black Lightning to be part of the Arrow-verse crossover. Amell states, “I think that anything you can do to expand the universe and to build out what we’ve built on our show would be great,” Amell continued. “So I’m glad that show’s doing well, I hope that it has a very successful run, and I would love to be a small part of it in some way, shape, or form.”

With two episodes remaining, Black Lightning airs Tuesdays at 9pm on the CW.
