5) The History!
Though I wasn’t familiar with the comic strip at first, I became interested in the yellow trench-coat wearing detective after watching Warren Beatty’s cinematic adaptation. This was a comic book movie that had an all-star legends cast, featuring A Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, and Kathy Bates. It was a visual marvel that made me want to read the comic afterwards.
4) The Writing!
Writer/artist Michael Avon Oeming does a great job delivering various police procedurals in different decades. Even when Tracy is on a romantic date with Tess Trueheart, he is dedicated to the job and obsessed with laying down the law. In a futuristic tale, Oeming does a fantastic job of putting Tracy smack-dab in the middle of a high speed chase. Shawn Lee’s lettering captures Tracy’s grumbling narration in thought balloons and the old-school phrases, such as “Dangnabbit.”
3) The Artwork!

Oeming does a a great job with Tracy’s facial ticks and expressions. In three panels, Tracy stays silent as his emotions run from anger to acceptance. I love how there is an entire splash page dedicated to a cheeky crossword puzzle.
2) The Colors!
Colorist Taki Soma captures the old-school feel of police procedurals, such as The Naked City. Tracy starts off with a brown trench coat and matching fedora hat. The iconic yellow trench coat returns in the climatic third act and the entrance is quite memorable.
