A riveting and fun adaptation, Firefly #2 (BOOM! Studios) delivers the action-packed thrills of the Wild West in outer space. Based on Joss Whedon’s cult favorite Fox TV series, every page is filled with hilarious meta humor and jaw-dropping western landscapes.

The untold story of the Unification War continues! As the crew of the Serenity scrambles to fix their damaged ship before anyone finds them, Mal and Zoe must face their past-and the reactions of their mighty disgruntled crew.

Here are 5 reasons why you should get Firefly #2:

5) What Happened Before!

The captain and first mate of Serenity, a “Firefly-class” spaceship, are at the top of the Most Wanted list. Mal thought he could outrun his past, but all of a sudden, his simple mission goes horribly wrong. He’s unfortunately forced to confront The Unificators, mercenaries deputized to hunt down war criminals.

4) The Writing!

Not only does writer Greg Pak recreate the magic of the show, he uses the installment to explore the backgrounds. Only mentioned in dialogue previously, we now see flashbacks of  the Unification War. Letterer Jim Campbell does a great job capturing the anguishing effects of the past in Mal and Zoe’s dialogue.

3) The Art!

Artist Dan McDaid does an amazing job capturing the western look in wide shot, especially in the backgrounds. In the imagery, I loved seeing Mal and his ragtag team riding across the sand on horses. Mal and Zoe are exceptional when they’re thrown into suspenseful shootouts.

2) The Colors!

I absolutely loved the vivid palette that colorist Marcelo Costa uses for the western setting, a rich reminder of John Ford films. The flashbacks are draped in a dark red tone. Notice how the entire issue takes place in 24-hour period.

1) A Thrilling Western!

A worthy companion to the Joss Whedon show, Firefly #2 loves dishing out the western shootouts and space battles. Really looking forward to the next issue!
