Marking a major milestone in the comic book industry,The Goon #1 (Albatross Funnybooks) is brilliantly bizarre with its laugh-out-loud comedy and eye-popping horror. Longtime fans will love the return of the Goon and his sidekick; plus newcomers will join rank once they get their hands on the first issue.
Goon & Franky return from strange adventures abroad to find a horde of unsavory characters have filled the void left in his absence from Lonely Street.
Here are 5 reasons why we’re excited for The Goon #1:
5) It’s A Jumping On Point!
As we previously mentioned, Powell described the new launch, “The first issue of the new Albatross Funnybook’s THE GOON is a perfect jumping on point for new readers and die hard fans alike! If anyone needs help reprogramming your joyless cult existence, I’ll be happy to personally put a copy of The Goon #1 in your hands along any of the 23 stops on my international Goon 20th Anniversary barnstorming tour.”
4) The Writing!
Overflowing with ideas, Powell has the the Goon and Franky return, strangers in their own home, with untold tales waiting to be explored. But right now, the hilarious duo have to deal with gentrification and looking for real estate with a haunted house. The lettering does a fantastic job capturing the raunchy and loud crowd at the Goon’s favorite bar.
3) The Artwork!
Powell’s rough and quirky signature style can instantly be seen in the character designs. From the real estate agent to his rotten teeth, to Frank’s round eyes, every little detail shouts out so much flair. I love that The Goon has such an expressive face, even though half his head is covered by his cap.
2) The Colors!
Aided by Powell, colorist Rachel Cohen adds dark tones to the gritty texture. Notice how the entire first issue takes place during the night, which means the source is coming from streetlights and light bulbs. I love how the last pages are composed of black and white tones.
1) A Visual Delight!
A visual delight, The Goon #1 comes off the rails with so much snappy comedy. After celebrating The Goon’s 20th Anniversary Party, creator Eric Powell hasn’t lost his touch and continues to have a marvelous imagination.
The Goon arrives in stores on March 13th, 2019.
