Angel #3, BOOM! Studios

A fresh and nostalgic installment, Angel #3 (BOOM! Studios) takes a rejuvenating twist towards  the return of a surprise character. A clever spinoff of Buffy The Vampire Slayer starring David Boreanaz, Joss Whedon’s vampire without a soul examines the sins of his past before he can find inner peace.

Los Angeles is becoming infested with more supernatural threats than ever before-and Angel needs to know why before he can complete the rituals to become human once again. But the vampire-with-a-soul’s quest for redemption won’t be as simple as he hoped. When a new threat arrives on the scene and forces Angel to truly examine his past.

Here are 5 reasons why you should read Angel #3:

5) What Happened Before!

After exiling himself from the rest of humanity, Angel finds himself reluctantly visiting an old friend. Elsewhere, there is a vicious enemy tapping into social media and seeking out potential victims. Angel finds himself unexpectedly getting involved when his old friend is brutally murdered.

4) The Writing!

Writer Bryan Hill does a fantastic job breathing life into Winifred Burkle’s return. Something has traumatized Fred that has left her speaking in riddles and numbers . Letterer Ed Dukeshire does a great job displaying Fed’s fractured mind as she could possibly be a love interest and the antagonist at the same time.

3) The Artwork!

The highlight of the issue is what artist Gleb Melnikov does with Fred’s character design. Notice how Fred also has her eyes wide open,as if she’s staring off into space. Fred never looks at the person talking to her, but she’s always listening.

2) The Colors!

Colorist Roman Titov has two different palettes between Angelus’ past and Angel’s present. Notice how there is more gray and dark tones when Angel fights in the mental institution. There are reds and yellows during Angelus’ violent past.

1) A Great Return!

Enhancing the plot further, Angel #3 brings a major character from the TV show into the fold. I look forward to what Fred’s return means in the next issue.

Angel #3 arrives in stores on July 31st, 2019.
