A visual triumph, Britannia: Lost Eagles of Rome #1 thrills as a terrific historical adventure supported by strong and well-rounded characters. A fun nod to the sword and sandal genre, readers are going to enjoy the battle scenes and interesting plot.

In the mist-shrouded Germanic forest of Tottenwald, the unthinkable has happened! A rampaging barbarian horde has crushed three of Rome’s most highly skilled detachments in battle…and captured their mighty Roman eagles. His authority threatened by this all-too-public shame, the mad emperor Nero has dispatched Antonius Axia, the empire’s finest “detectioner” and hero of Britannia, and Achillia, the sword-wielding champion of the gladiatorial arena, to reclaim his stolen relics at any cost.

Here are 5 reasons why you should get Britannia: Lost Eagles of Rome #1:

5) The Writing!

Writer Peter Milligan mixes historical fiction with mystery and action in an epic-sized tale. Antonius Axia, the world’s first detectioner, is back on the case and he needs a feisty partner. Letterer Dave Sharpe hints at their personalities, with Antonius as the brains and Achillia bringing in the muscle as a female gladiator.

4) The Artwork!

Robert Gill’s artwork is utterly amazing because the wardrobe and backgrounds have such spectacular detail! Gill kicks off the pages with an epic-sized battle sequence, one that involves a sword through someone’s head! Adding to her personality, Gill illustrates Achillia as thrill-seeker who’s actually having fun.

3) The Colors!

Colorists José Vallarrubia and Diego Rodriguez focus on atmosphere in the opening pages, with the feel of the rain and mugginess. Notice how the trees in the forest are a shade darker. Red is a significant color because of the time period’s clothing.

2) The Extras!

Stick around the last pages and you’ll get to some behind-the-making of tidbits. Look at how the page progresses from the script to illustration.

1) A Grand Spectacle!

As a historical drama, Britannia: Lost Eagles of Rome #1 mixes gladiator combat with political intrigue. I look forward to the next issue!
