Smart and exciting, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #84 (IDW Publishing) is told with the purest love of the action genre. In its concluding chapter, the TMNT series manages to keep surprising its readers, while taking the popular franchise into new and fresh territory.

In the fourth part of Kingdom of Rats, The TMNT come face to face with possibly their most powerful adversary yet– The Rat King! Will they be able to defeat him before he makes all of NYC his twisted domain?

Here are 5 reasons why you should get Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #83:

5) What Happened Before!

Kingdom of Rats presented the inevitable return of the Rat King. Though there is a rift between them, Leonardo and Splinter had a frightening prophecy of the Rat King’s sinister plan. After defeating the Rat King’s brother, will the Turtles arrive in the nick time to save the innocent children from their nemesis?

4) Turtles In Snow!

From a story by Kevin Eastman and Bobby Curnow, writer Tom Waltz combines horror and action at a gripping pace. Shawn Lee’s lettering emphasizes certain words to highlight the suspense as the Turtles confront the Rat King. It’s quite terrifying as the Turtles fight off against a crawling horde of red-eyed rats.

3) The Artwork!

Artist Dave Wachter ramps up the horror with the illustrations of The Rat King. In Wachter’s take, the Rat King is ghoulish looking with his pale face and moves like a zombie with his slender body. I love the wide shot of the Turtles defending themselves against the brainwashed children.

2) The Colors!

Notice how colorist Ronda Pattison focuses on the whites of the eyes of the brainwashed children. The Rat King’s eyes are colored in a bright red hue. The Turtles are in a dark green shade because the action takes place at nighttime.

1) A Satisfying Read!

Inking TMNT #84.

Though never meant to be political, Kingdom of Rats comes out a time, echoing real-time events, where children are being forcefully stripped from their parents. The world is experiencing enough trauma from this very administration, which is why Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #84 offers a ray of hope for those disillusioned, such as myself.
