Thirsty horror fans will definitely want to sink their teeth into 30 Days of Night #3 (IDW Publishing), which unleashes all the vampire action in all its bloody goodness. Writer Steve Niles and artist Piotr Kowalski boldly reimagine the original comic book series that became a blockbuster movie franchise.

As we previously mentioned, the sun has set over an isolated Alaskan township and will not rise again for the next thirty days. A new evil emerges from the shadows to terrorize the tow. After a series of strange events and horrific killings, the question becomes, what lurks in the shadows?

Here are 5 reasons why you should get 30 Days of Night #3:

5) It’s Not A Remake!

After two pulse-pounding issues, writer Steve Niles continues to put Deputy Stella into the forefront of the thrilling narrative. With Sheriff Eben missing in action, Stella has to make the hard and uneasy decisions, knowing there will be consequences to the Barrow residents. Not only does she have to protect herself, she’s left in charge of keeping everyone else safe.

4) The Vampires Come Out!

Niles wants these bloodsuckers to be different from the original 30 Days of Night. Though the rules have changed, the vamps are still mean, angry, and vengeful. I’m going to wait till the fourth issue though before mentioning the differences between the comic, this reboot, and the movie.

3) The Art!

Artist Piotr Kowalski brings in his own take on the character designs of the vampires. I feel like the illustrations are more grounded and punkish, similar to the ones in Near Dark. Kowalski highlights the facial expressions in closeups to show the vampires having fun in their evil nature.

2) The Colors!

Colorist Brad Simpson captures a frozen setting, focusing on the whiteness of the snow. I love how the tones drained of color when the vampires show up. Simpson plays around with shadows, especially the main light source goes dark.

1) A Must Read!

With 30 Days of Night #3, the horror series continues to be a knockout read. I can’t wait to find out what happens next!
