5) What Happened Before!
After thwarting the Rat King’s sinister plan, The Turtles arrived in the nick time to save the innocent children. As Baxter Stockman contemplates running for Mayor of New York, April wonders if his ambitions are clouding his judgement. Elsewhere, the battle between the Triceratops and the Utroms has escalated.
4) Battle Lines!
From a story by Kevin Eastman and Bobby Curnow, writer Tom Waltz analyzes the consequences of war as the Triceratops and the Utroms duke it out. The Turtles have teamed up with the Mutanimals, but Raphael bitterly joins their side. Shawn Lee’s lettering emphasizes the danger of being peace-keepers as the group is thrown smack-dab into the kill-zone.
3) The Artwork!
Artist Dave Wachter does a fantastic job with the wartime metaphors during the opening pages. You have soldiers running across the beachfront, dodging incoming fire. Notice how the island is littered with dead bodies of fallen comrades.
2) The Colors!
Notice how colorist Ronda Pattison captures the essence of war movies at Burrow Island. Though the Turtles are fighting off-panel, we know who it is just through the color palette. Pattison uses purple to represent Donatello, blue for Leonardo, and so on.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #87 takes the allegorical themes a step further to foreshadow a much bigger story. I can’t wait to see what happens next!
