An engaging installment, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #86 (IDW Publishing)  keeps the plot moving at at fast pace, while adding tons of action and comedy. As its newest chapter kickstarts, the TMNT series manages to keep readers entertained, while taking the popular franchise into new and fresh territory.

The maniacal Bishop has his eyes set on destroying the Utroms and the Triceratons once and for all. The Turtles will have to use all of their resources to stop him…but new divisions between the brothers threaten to ruin the plan before it begins!

Here are 5 reasons why you should get Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #86:

5) What Happened Before!

After thwarting the Rat King’s sinister plan, The Turtles arrived in the nick time to save the innocent children. They reluctantly reconciled with their father to help the children find a home. As Baxter Stockman contemplates running for Mayor of New York, April wonders if his ambitions are clouding his judgement.

4) Battle Lines!

From a story by Kevin Eastman and Bobby Curnow, writer Tom Waltz analyzes the consequences of war as the battles between the Triceratops and the Utroms have escalated. The Turtles have to decide whether they should be the peacekeepers or become soldiers. Shawn Lee’s lettering emphasizes each of the brother’s motivations, especially Raphael who wants to deal with street crime.

3) The Artwork!

Artist Dave Wachter ramps up the war metaphors during the opening pages. Notice how most of the gunfire and explosions take place on the beachfront. In group shots, each of the Turtles have different facial expressions as if they are arguing their debate.

2) The Colors!

Notice how colorist Ronda Pattison uses the low-lighting to darken the shadows of Burrow Island. Most of the action on the island takes place on a cloudy night, with no moon. The light source comes from the explosions in the background.

1) A Satisfying Read!

The start of a new arc, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #86 introduces allegorical themes that foreshadow a bigger story. I can’t wait to see what happens next!
