Syfy has aired their newest supernatural/horror/family drama, Superstition, introducing audiences with Episode 1: The Pilot. Led by the patriarch Isaac (Mario Van Peebles), the Hastings are a tight-knit family who use their arcane weaponry and mystical skills to battle evil.
In the flashback, Calvin Hastings (Brad James) remembers how he wasn’t able to save his brother. In the present day, Calvin has returned from war and visits his family’s funeral home. While Calvin catches up with his father and mother, Bea (Robbine Lee), The Man in Black (W. Earl Brown) attacks a nearby church.
The town sheriff, May (Demetria McKinney), investigates the gruesome murders, keeping Isaac updated on the supernatural evidence. Calvin and May used to be romantically involved before he left for war. Calvin wants to rekindle his relationship with her and return to the family business, but Isaac doesn’t think he’s ready.
After rescuing a woman from danger, Calvin discovers from May that he has a daughter. Realizing Garvey (Morgana Van Peebles) is his daughter, Calvin confronts his father about keeping his her a secret. Isaac gives Calvin gives him a hard but honest lesson about parenting. The family reunion is put on hold as The Man in Black continues his killing spree.
Calvin and Garvey (Morgana Van Peebles) have an uncomfortable chat in the elevator. She doesn’t want a father and he doesn’t know how to take care of his daughter. Meanwhile, Tilly (Tatiana Zappardino) thinks she can pinpoint The Man In Black’s whereabouts but she needs Bea’s help.
During her spell, Bea finds herself getting closer to the Man in Black. Though Isaac gets his wife out of the trance, the Man in Black still has her under his control. Bea’s life is now under the clock after being poisoned.
Tilly now has everything she needs to find The Man in Black’s location. Isaac knows his son had a vision of of his death, but Calvin won’t admit. What matters now is saving Bea from the venom spreading inside her.
As father and son walk across the cemetery, Calvin suffers a hallucination about his dead brother. Calvin doesn’t realize he’s pointing his gun at his own father. After he snaps out of it, The Man in Black laughs and shows up for the ensuing fight.
Father and son end up getting into lengthy battle with The Man in Black. Calvin gets knocked around before ended up on the ground. During their struggle, Isaac is in trouble as The Man in Black has him pinned down.
Still reeling from battle, Calvin picks up the machete and chops off his enemy’s head. Unfortunately, all of this was just a trick. The Man in Black laughs as Calvin realizes he murdered his own father.
Holding his dead father’s decapitated head, Calvin vows he will kill The Man in Black.
