A fun installment, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #85 (IDW Publishing) achieves a lot with humor as the plot naturally blends action and mystery. At the start of its newest chapter, the TMNT series manages to keep readers entertained, while taking the popular franchise into new and fresh territory.

Leatherhead returns to New York, and this time, he’s got one goal in mind—the destruction of the Turtles!

Here are 5 reasons why you should get Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #85:

5) What Happened Before!

Kingdom of Rats presented the inevitable return of the Rat King. Though there is a rift between them, Leonardo and Splinter had a frightening prophecy of the Rat King’s sinister plan. The Turtles arrived in the nick time to save the innocent children. They reluctantly reconciled with their father in order to help the children find a home.

4) April!

From a story by Kevin Eastman and Bobby Curnow, writer Tom Waltz introduces a subplot for April O’ Neil. As Baxter Stockman contemplates running for Mayor of New York, April wonders if his ambitions are clouding his judgement. Shawn Lee’s lettering hilariously highlights April’s frustrations in pretending to be Baxter’s personal assistant.

3) The Artwork!

Artist Brahm Revel ramps up the action when the Turtles meet up with Leatherhead. I love how Revel makes great use of the museum setting! The Turtles have to pass through the dinosaur exhibit before their confrontation with Leatherhead.

2) The Colors!

Notice how colorist Ronda Pattison uses the low-lighting to mix shades of green and grey on Leatherhead’s skin. When Leatherhead attacks, the background turns to a bright yellow hue. The white eyes of the Turtles are so expressive, even though they have no eyeballs.

1) A Satisfying Read!

A nice breather after Kingdom of Rats, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #85 introduces a new story arc that readers will surely enjoy. I really liked the surprising twist with Leatherhead and can’t wait to see what happens next.
