A tantalizing mix between rural mystery and urban horror, Gideon Falls #1: Director’s Cut (Image Comics) is a spellbinding special edition in glorious black & white. The creative team behind Old Man Logan and Green Arrow dive into a dark and surreal mediation of mental illness and faith with such dark and intense mediation.

First, we have a reclusive young man obsessed with a conspiracy in the city’s trash. Then we have a washed-up Catholic priest arriving in a small town full of dark secrets. Now their lives will become intertwined around the mysterious legend of The Black Barn.

Here are 5 reasons why you should pick up Gideon Falls #1: Director’s Cut:

5) The Writing!

Writer Jeff Lemire keeps his plot moving with such well-defined characters. To be honest, I was more interested with Father Wilfred. Having grown up in a Catholic community, I felt I was projecting my own thoughts about the complicated nature of faith. There are more interesting characters to come, such as Sheriff Miller.

4) The Artwork!

Andrea Sorrentino’s artwork in Gideon Falls is nothing less than breathtaking. I loved looking at every page of the heavy inks by Sorrentino. The fantastic illustrations have interesting and creative layouts.

3) The Colors!

Colorist Dave Stewart makes spots in the pages that should have the color red. It’s a clever to tell the eye to follow this direction. Notice how the dialogue balloons and captions have a different tone to them as well.

2) Comic Book Page!

If you’re ever wanted to see what a comic book script looks like, Lemire shares his at the end of the first installment.
